Scope and Contents

The J. Edgar Monroe Collection consists primarily of documents related to Mr. Monroe’s business interests, such as the Canal Bank and Trust Co., Canal Assets, Inc., Electric Bond and Share, and Southdown, Inc. The collection also contains a small number of Monroe’s personal documents and school records of Robert J. Monroe, J. Edgar Monroe’s nephew.

Biographical or Historical Information

J. Edgar Monroe was born on February 11, 1897 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and became an active businessman upon leaving the military. He served as an executive in companies such as Boland Machine and Manufacturing Co., Inc., Canal Bank and Trust Co., Canal Assets, Inc., Southdown, Inc., and Electric Bond and Share. Mr. Monroe was a generous philanthropist, over the years donating tens of millions of dollars to Catholic charities and Loyola University New Orleans. Mr. Monroe did not attend college, but he was honored by Loyola University as a Doctor of Humane Letters in 1991 as thanks for his extensive charitable contributions. This collection has been arranged into nine series. The original order of materials that began as bound volumes (covering one bound volume from Series IV and the entirety of Series V – VII) has been preserved. The arrangement scheme for the rest of the collection was imposed during processing in the absence of a usable original order. Except for Series V – VII, the folders of each series are arranged alphabetically.
