Scope and Contents

The Louisiana Women Writers Symposium Collection primarily consists of correspondence and photographs.  This correspondence relates to the organization of the symposium and the publication of essays presented at the symposium in an expanded volume.  The included photographs depict various Louisiana women writers and were used as illustrations for the Louisiana Women Writers essays and bibliography. The Louisiana Women Writers Symposium was held on September 19-20, 1986 at Loyola University New Orleans.  The conference was funded by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and co-sponsored by Loyola University and the Women’s Studies Consortium of Louisiana.  It was co-directed by Dorothy H. Brown and Barbara C. Ewell, faculty members of the English department of City College, Loyola University. The symposium featured sixteen scholars and moderators and a reading by Ellen Gilchrist over the course of a day and a half, and selected presentations from the conference were published with additional essays in 1988 by the New Orleans Review and by LSU Press in 1992 as a book entitled “Louisiana Women Writers: New Essays and a Comprehensive Bibliography”.

Biographical or Historical Information

Dorothy H. Brown attended Louisiana State University as an undergraduate and earned her Master’s and Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  Dr. Brown was a professor of English at City College of Loyola University New Orleans from 1975 until 1996, and was a founding member of Loyola University’s women’s studies program and the Women’s Resource Center.  In 1991 she was honored with the university’s Dux Academicus Award.  She authored “Christian Humanism in the Late English Morality Plays” and co-edited “Louisiana Women Writers: New Essays and Comprehensive Bibliography” with Barbara C. Ewell.  Dr. Brown died on January 13, 2013 at Arbor Terrace in Decatur, Georgia. Barbara C. Ewell attended the University of Dallas as an undergraduate and earned her Doctorate in English Renaissance Literature from the University of Notre Dame.  Dr. Ewell served as an assistant professor between the years 1974 and 1984 at Loyola University New Orleans, Newcomb College, University College at Tulane, and the University of Mississippi.  Since 1984 she has served as a Professor of English at City College of Loyola University New Orleans  and Loyola University New Orleans, earning the university’s Dux Academicus Award in 2003.  Ewell has authored “Kate Chopin”, a bio-critical study of the author by the same name, and co-edited both “Louisiana Women Writers: New Essays and Comprehensive Bibliography” with Dorothy H. Brown and “Southern Local Color: Stories of Region, Race and Gender” with Pamela Menke.

This collection has been created from two separate collections formerly belonging to Barbara C. Ewell and Dorothy H. Brown.  It has been arranged into three series.  The folders of Series I and Series II-A are arranged chronologically by year.  The folders of Series II-B and Series II-C are arranged alphabetically by last name.  The folders of Series III are arranged alphabetically by folder title.  The arrangement scheme for the collection was imposed during processing in the absence of a usable original order.
