Ben C. Toledano New Orleans Collection

Harnett Kane was a native of New Orleans who authored over 25 books, often about New Orleans or the South. Kane also worked as a reporter for The New Orleans Item. He participated in a regular correspondence with Mrs. Nell Henson, a New Orleans book reviewer and wife of Dr. C. C. Henson, a prominent local educator. Their correspondence in this collection mainly concerns his recent writings. Riley Scott was a poet who appears to have been active in the early 20th century. His poems were sent specifically to the husband of Nell Henson, Mr. C. C. Henson. The publications in the collection include several southern university periodicals, such as Delta and Dalliance from Louisiana State University and the Loyola Law Journal. Additionally, local New Orleans publications include issues of Arts and Industries, Double Dealer and Southern Manufacturer. There are also several publications from the first public high school for boys in Louisiana, Warren Easton Boys’ High School (nowWarren Easton Charter School). Sheet music in the collection features songs from New Orleans institutions such as Loyola University of the South and the Louisiana State National Guard, as well as music by Louisiana composers such as L.M. Gottschalk and Roark Bradford. Also included are German compositions, reflecting New Orleans’ 19th century German music community. The collection also contains ephemera from New Orleans businesses and Mardi Gras krewes, as well as scrapbooks documenting New Orleans in the Nineteenth and Twentieth century.
