Biographical or Historical Information

The Concert Choir of New Orleans was formed on January 5, 1959. Fifty-four singing members soon joined and on May 22, 1959 at Tulane's Dixon Hall the choir presented its first concert. Almost forty-three years after it began, the Concert Choir of New Orleans disbanded in December 2001.

Abstract

The Concert Choir was a volunteer, nonprofit organization governed by officers and a board of directors chosen at the group's annual meeting. Choir members were chosen through auditioning, and the choir usually consisted of forty-five to sixty members. Administrative and performance expenses were covered by dues, donations, ticket sales, and progeam advertosing. There were no salaries except those of Musical Director and the Accompanist. Programs ranged from classical to contemporary, with an emphasis on seldom performed compositions.

The choir's archives are arranged into six series: Series I. Correspondence Series II. Minutes Series III. Concert Programs Series IV. Subject Files Series V. Financial Records Series VI. Scrapbooks & Miscellaneous. When appropriate, the material within the series is arranged chronologically.
