Biographical or Historical Information

The Gulf Restoration Network (GRN) is a New Orleans-based coalition of environmental groups and individuals that seeks to restore the Gulf of Mexico to an ecologically and biologically sustainable condition. The GRN emerged from the December1994 meeting of the Gulf of Mexico Working Group and held its first strategy meeting in March 1995. Initially, the GRN was housed and funded by the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund. From 1997 to 1999 it was a project of the Tides Center. In 1999 it became a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization and has since received funding from several foundations, including the McKtllght Foundation, Wray Trust, Moriah Fund and Pew Charitable Trusts. The GRN's member organizations develop strategies that are implemented by the GRN's staff and its Steering Committee. It has focused on three areas of work: fostering sustainable management offisheries; stopping polluted run-off that results in the Gulfs Dead Zone; and opposing Corps of Engineers policies that destroy wetlands. It reports on its work in the quarterly newspaper GRN NEWS, which includes the insert Fish Tales.
